Getting Around DC, Maryland and Virginia
Choose transport for your actual route, then check the fare, last return and service notices before traveling.
Start with one area per day
Keep a museum day, an Annapolis day and a Northern Virginia outing as separate plans. Plan the route from your accommodation to the exact entrance, including walking and transfers. A destination can be in the DMV without being a short Metro trip from downtown DC.
Metro and local buses
Use WMATA’s current trip tools for Washington-area rail and bus journeys. Review your intended day and time rather than using an old rush-hour fare rule. DC Circulator ended service on December 31, 2024; use current Metrobus routes instead. Baltimore and Annapolis have their own local operators and fare arrangements.
Old Town without a car
For Old Town Alexandria, plan the trip to King St–Old Town and decide how much of King Street to walk. The free King Street Trolley runs toward City Hall/Market Square. Check its current hours and plan the remaining distance to your destination.
Driving and regional journeys
For parks or destinations beyond your chosen transit network, compare the full drive with available regional transport. Save the return route, allow for traffic and include parking in your budget. Do not assume a commuter service operates at the time you want to return.
Before leaving the venue
Check current service notices and the return journey while you still have a reliable connection. Keep your accommodation address and an alternative route available offline.
